Like the First Robotics Competition, the First Tech Challenge had a new game every year which involves critical thinking, math, science, engineering, and teamwork. What makes FTC different though is that it focusses on smaller robots (constrained in 2010 to an 18 inch cube), built of simpler parts (LEGOs and NXT). With these parts, there is less cutting and welding and more bolts and universal parts.

This year's game is called Hot Shot. In the game, teams will compete in alliances of two teams. The alliances will attempt to score as many 9 inch circumfrence balls into two different goals. During the first 30 seconds of the game, or the autonomous period, robots must be controlled without human interaction. The next 90 seconds will be the driver controlled period where the try to score as many points as possible. In the last 30 seconds, the temas have an option to add in a special, bonus ball.
